Varsity Football 2011
Aug. 19 at Pioneer 7 p.m.- Last year the Panthers went up early before the Kings had a strong second half to beat them. This year started off similarly, but with a different outcome. The Panthers had a 7-0 lead at the half. The Kings opened the second half on their own 31-yard line and ended it on the Pioneer 14-yard line when Pioneer returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown to take a 13-0 lead which would beat the Kings 13-0. The Kings had a total of 171 yards of offense, 114 yards on the ground. Sheldon Slusser added 40 yards rushing and 57 yards passing. Charlie Wright added 22 yards rushing on five attempts.
Aug. 26 at West Lafayette 7 p.m.- Cass went three-and-out following the opening kickoff, then the Red Devils went 71 yards in 6 plays to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first half. Following an exchange of punts, the Kings went 54 yards in 12 plays for their first scoring drive of the season to trail 7-6. Then the Red Devils took the following kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown extending their lead to 14-6. The Kings would reach the red zone two more times but would fail to convert. The Kings lost 35-6. Charlie Wright led the Kings with 70 yards on 14 carries.
Sept. 2 NORTHWESTERN 8 p.m- Last year the Kings beat the Tigers in the regular season, but lost to them in the tournament. This year the Tigers came out ready to play taking the opening play sixty-four yards for a touchdown. This set the tone for the rest of the game. Cass had three trips inside the Northwestern 10-yard line, and came away with no points. The Kings had 13 first downs to Northwestern's 12. The Kings start their season 0-3 for the first time since 1993.
Sept. 9 HAMILTON HEIGHTS 7 p.m- For the fourth week in a row, Lewis Cass had the unenviable task of attempting to win its first game of 2011 against a ranked opponent. The Kings came up short losing 27-15, but this time with a different feel to it. The Kings had a chance to win with 3:11 left in the game until Heights had a 50 yard pick six to seal the win. The Kings had 276 rushing yards to Heights 41, and had 10 more first downs. Jake Collins rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Charlie Wright scored his first touchdown of the season.
Sept. 16 PERU (homecoming) 7 p.m- The Kings get their first victory against the Peru Tigers. They put a beating on the Tigers with the score of 45-0. Cass is now 1-4 and 1-2 MIC. Drew Shepherd took the ball the first two times and ran it for 34 yards. Charlie Wright then ran for 17 yards for Cass' first score. Marcus Hedrick made the extra pt. and put the Kings 7-0 on the first quarter. After forcing another punt from the Tigers, Cass scored again with Shepherd running in from seven yards to make the score 14-0. Jacob Collins made the score 21-0 when he scored from three yards. Andrew Dagget made the final score of the half with a beautiful pass in the end zone with no time left. Blake Cain scored Cass' fifth touchdown on a five yard run. Hedrick scored a 26- yard field goal thus making the score 38-0. Jake Wilburn, a freshman running back, Scored the final touchdown with a 39 yard touchdown. Wright led the Kings with 71 yards on seven carries and one touchdown. Slusser completed 3 of 6 pass attempts for 44 yards with one touchdown.
Sept. 23 at Eastern 7 p.m.- The battle was hard and evenly matched, but Eastern made two huge special team plays which gave them a 21-14 win. The Kings struck first taking a 7-0 lead that lasted only 13 seconds. Eastern took the following kickoff back for a touchdown to tie the game at 7 all. The Kings scored again on a 70 yard drive just to be answered right back in the third quarter making the score 14 all. With two minutes left in the game the Kings faced another fourth down and decided to do another rugby punt. Earlier in the game the rugby produced a 55 yard kick by Austin Foreman. This time the punt was blocked by Josiah price and returned for a touchdown.
Sept. 30 at Taylor 7 p.m.- The Kings got their second win of the season against Taylor. The Kings won 60-0 and have beaten Taylor the last 14 games. The Kings scored first on a short run by Peyton Young to take a 6-0 lead. From there the Kings never looked back scoring and defending easily the rest of the game. The Kings racked up a ton of yards to Taylor's very few. The Kings took advantage of a younger team that had a lot of turnovers. The Kings move to 2-5 with the win.
Oct. 7 MACONAQUAH 7 p.m.- The Kings get another victory on the Braves. They beat Maconaquah 37-0 shutting them out and not letting them score. The first half was dominated by the Kings defense on the Braves. The score was only 7-0 the first and half and the kings found some offense in the second half and making the score 23-0. Billy Wilson made a great impact for the Kings Defence.
Oct. 14 at Western 7 p.m.- The Kings lost to the Panthers 21-7. It was 7-7, until the Panthers scored with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Drew Shepherd scored a 56 -yard run. The Kings could not get passed the Panthers Defence.
Oct. 21- Sectional, Fairfield 7:30 p.m.- The Kings beat the Falcons 41-17. The Falcons could not stop the King's rushing attack. Drew Shepherd led the way with 129 yards on 14 carries, followed by Jacob Collins (98 yards), and Jacob Williams 58 yards on eight carries. The Falcons scored first making the score 7-0. The Kings answered right back followed by a Falcon field goal making the score 10-7. From there the Kings never looked back.
Oct. 28- Sectional, Rochester 7 p.m.- The Kings defeated the Zebras 28-7. Cass used a familiar attack to defeat the Zebras, a stout defense and a powerful running game. Most of the Kings' success came from their defense who held the Zebras to 38 total yards of offense in the second half. Drew Shepherd had 103 yards rushing and 2 interceptions. Grant Maxwell stuffed the line of scrimmage allowing only 39 rushing yards on 16 attempts. The Kings go to No. 5 ranked Bremen (11-0) for the Sectional Championship.
Nov. 4- Sectional, Bremen 7 p.m.- The Kings ended their season with a 28-6 loss against Bremen. After falling behind 21-0 in the first ten minutes of the game the Kings started playing better only allowing one touchdown the next three quarters. The Kings got their first first-down of the game on their fourth possession. It was very hard for the Kings to get something started offensively and the Lions took advantage of it. Jacob Collins led the Kings with 54 yards followed by Drew Shepherd with 44 yards. Justen Downhour and Tyler Angle each had an interception for the Kings and Peyton Young had a sack.
